Chasing the Taper

Chasing the Taper

The practice of building bamboo fly rods, which began in the 19th century, is a dying art kept alive by a few master craftsmen, using techniques and skills that have been passed down from generation to generation.

However, there is a danger that this knowledge will become lost forever as fewer new builders embrace the time-intensive and economically unsustainable process of making a rod entirely by hand.

This film attempts to chronicle and preserve this vanishing legacy by interviewing some of the greatest remaining classic bamboo rod makers in the world – before it’s too late.
